from http://www.adaptivepath.com/publications/essays/archives/000385.php is see that i tried to do it that way in 2000. tools were not that nice these days;
crossbrowser javascripting, buggy CSS support and a small "fat-client" instable JDK applet in a rather complex frameset scenario were simply too much to handle. IBM research did another try concentrating on DHTML. nevertheless, the architecture was the same: async webrequests the user should not have been aware of most of the time. i don't consider my work to be prior art, but it took Google almost 5 years to take same direction.
